Nicol David Ousts Irving after two qualifying wins

by Sarah Fitz-Gerald in Cairo, Sept 2 2001
My match started the evening and I can honestly say Vanessa played well but I kept coming out of the rallies the winner. We played some tough long points and Vanessa chased hard. I felt I played well and was consistent with good length and volley drops. Vanessa was knackered in the third but fought the whole way.

Young Nicol David's match against veteran Liz Irving was highly anticipated. Irving showed she was far from retired, as she easily dispensed with highly regarded Jenny Tranfield in less than 1/2 hour. With that as background, Nicol David showed today that she is "ready for prime time".

Liz Irving commenced the match in a dominating and positive style. Her game plan was perfect and she had complete control until 8-5 in the second. Nicol kept retrieving Lizs best shots and clawed her way back into the game. Nicol 's confidence grew with each point and her superior fitness showed as Liz's fitness ebbed away.

Liz pushed one final time in the 4th, but Nicol 's retrieving proved too strong forcing Liz to go shorter and lower catching the tin.

Becky Macree hung in against Natalie Grinham great first game start, her experience showed as she took control to clench the next three games. Cassie Campion proved too strong for Rachael Grinham, with Cassie dominating the delay tactics that both players like to use from the front of the court.

Cassie has lifted game in anticipation of tomorrows clash against rising star Nicol David.
