NICOL CELEBRATES THIRD SUCCESSIVE AL-AHRAM TITLE by Howard Harding, Sept 10 2001 England's Peter Nicol signalled his determination to recapture the world No1 ranking he lost this month when he defeated Canadian rival Jonathon Power 15-8 17-15 15-12 in the final of the $75,000 Al-Ahram International in Egypt to claim his 35th PSA Tour title. The 60-minute victory was the former Scot's fourth title in the sport's most spectacular setting - on the open-air court staged alongside the famous Great Pyramids of Giza, near Cairo - and the third in a row after the championship also doubled as the World Open in October 1999. Nicol's triumph - which included victories over world No2 Power and the new Australian world No1 David Palmer - follows a dismal few weeks in the world champion's career which began with a rare first round defeat in last month's Hong Kong Open, then ended with a drop to No3 in the world rankings after a four-year spell in the top two. "I beat the two guys above me in the rankings, so the last two days have been very special," said an exuberant Nicol after the match in which he never let Power into his shorter rally-ending style. Power, in his first event since withdrawing from last month's Hong Kong Open with enteritis and tonsillitis, admitted afterwards: "I just couldn't get going. I'm tired." It was the pair's 24th career meeting - and Nicol has now extended his lead to 13-11. RESULTS: Al-Ahram International Squash
