PARKE PUNISHED BY GOUGH GAME-PLAN Welshman Alex Gough joined an exclusive band of players in their thirties causing upsets in the British Open Squash Championships when he dismissed sixth-seeded Englishman Simon Parke 15-7 15-10 15-11 in 55 minutes in today's (Thursday) second round at the NIA in Birmingham.

The pair are regular practice partners at the Nottingham club where they are based, with Yorkshireman Parke the victor in their two most recent meetings on the PSA Tour. "I went into the match with a game-plan - and it came off as well as I could have hoped," said the Newport-born 30-year-old ranked 13 in the world.

Gough now meets Australian David Palmer, the 3rd seed who knocked out compatriot Stewart Boswell 15-6 16-17 15-11 15-11 in 84 minutes. England's No2 seed Peter Nicol, now the event favourite following Wednesday's demise of top seed Jonathon Power, cruised to a 15-7 15-11 15-9 win over compatriot Mark Chaloner in 71 minutes.

An unexpected all-English quarter-final beckons for the former Scot, after unseeded Lee Beachill upset fifth-seeded Australian Paul Price in an 82-minute clash which concluded at 12.10am.

Beachill, the 23-year-old British national champion from Pontefract in Yorkshire, bravely fought back from 2-0 down to unseat last year's beaten finalist 16-17 3-15 15-8 15-11 15-7. The only upset on day two of second round matches in the women's event came when England's Rebecca Macree, the 13th seed from Essex, beat

Australia's 8th seed Rachael Grinham to claim her first quarter-final appearance in her 12th consecutive attempt. After forging a 2-0 lead, the 29-year-old world No11 from London allowed her higher-ranked opponent to take the next two games to level the match. Grinham led 3-0 and 5-4 in the decider, but Macree kept her cool to clinch the match 9-5 9-4 4-9 6-9 9-7 in 79 minutes.

Macree faces world champion Carol Owens for a place in the last four after the second-seeded New Zealand-based Australian beat England's Fiona Geaves 9-4 9-0 5-9 9-1 in 43 minutes. Sixteenth seed Vicky Botwright, who gave the tournament widespread media publicity after appearing scantily-clad in several British national newspapers following the organisers' refusal to let her play in a thong, fell 10-8 9-6 9-4 to English compatriot Natalie Grainger, the 5th seed.
