Another Pakistani First at Storied British Open

PAKISTAN FIRST
Carla Khan, the London born grand-daughter of the great Azam Khan, made
history today when she became the first Pakistani women ever to reach the
main draw of the British Open. Khan was brought up in London and coached by
her father, whose father, Azam, was considered by some to be an even better
squash player than his legendary brother Hashim.

Carla decided to adopt Pakistani nationality two years ago but was denied
permission to represent her new country in the Commonwealth Games. She is
expected to lead the Pakistan team at the next women's world championship,
to be held in Hong Kong at the end of this year.

In beating Tegwen Malik of Wales in the final qualifying round of the
British Open in Nottingham, Khan, who has risen to 32 in the October WISPA
rankings, has assured her place in the main draw to set the historic mark.

On the men's side, James Willstrop downed veteran Nottingham based international Simon Parke to advance to a first round meeting against Joe Kneipp.

British Open, Nottingham, England.
