Rooney Stops Shahid as Pakistanis Have Tough Qualifying Day September 29, 2003 It was a difficult day for the Pakistani contingent, as six Pakistanis went down to defeat and only one, Farrukh Zaman, advanced in first qualifying action in Nottingham. The British Open, once virtually owned by the Khan clan --- from Hashim and Roshan to Mohibullah, then Jahangir and Jansher, they collectively gathered in 29 British Open crowns, is proving this year to be a difficult year for the resurgent Pakistani squad. Nottingham-based Irishman John Rooney pulled off the biggest upset on the opening day of qualifying for the 2003 British Open Squash Championships at Nottingham Squash Club in England when he beat Pakistan's Shahid Zaman, ranked 47 places higher in the world, in straight games. Spurred on by local supporters, Rooney beat world No34 Shahid 17-15 15-8 15-10 in 45 minutes - and now faces Nottingham club-mate Simon Parke, the world No18 who is a 'veteran' of 12 British Open appearances since making his debut in 1989. Pakistan interest in the qualifying event was kept alive by Shahid's cousin Farrukh Zaman who took 87 minutes to overcome Belgium's Peter Pastijn 13-15 15-5 15-7 15-17 15-7. The world No41 from Peshawar now meets England's world No22 Adrian Grant, who was a straight games winner over compatriot Duncan Walsh. After the qualifying finals on Tuesday, the 2003 British Open Squash Championships get underway on the state-of-the-art all-glass court at the Albert Hall in Nottingham from 01-05 October.
