The first of two qualifying rounds began to-day (Saturday) at the Fitness Institute (T.D. Centre) and the Cambridge Club for the PACE Canadian Squash Classic which commences Monday November 15th at BCE Place in Toronto. The final four qualifiers will join the 12 higher ranked PSA players, including 8 of the top ten in the world, for the 16 person main draw event.

The qualifying rounds for the PACE Canadian Squash Classic were not kind to the lower ranked Canadian squash players as Ian Power (brother of Jonathon), Shahier Razik, Matthew Guiffre and David Phillips all fell to their opponents.

Two up-and-coming tour players who advanced today were Laurens Jan Anjema of the Netherlands and Joey Barrington of England, both of whom were kept on court for five extended games before they could advance.

Anjema will face an intriguing matchup against Canadian-based Australian veteran pro Paul Price. Price, who can be an imposing physical presence on the court will find an opponent in Anjema who will not shrink from the challenge.

Another intriguing matchup for Sunday will have tour veterans Martin Heath and Rodney Durbach facing off for a main draw spot. Heath would appear to be the favorite, however his play can be erratic and Durbach is always determined and steady.

The four Sunday finalists will advance to Day One of the PACE Canadian Squash Classic, on Monday, against #1 world ranked Lee Beachill (Eng.), #3 Peter Nicol (Eng.), #8 Karim Darwish (Egy.) and #10 Joseph Kneipp (Aus.).

The PACE Canadian Squash Classic, November 15th - 19th, 2004, is held in the Allen Lambert Galleria at BCE Place. TSN will carry the final three matches of the Classic, primetime, later this fall. The Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada is the recipient charity for the 2004 tournament.
