Sunday Feb 3, 2001
(From Princeton Sports Information Department)
Harrison Gabel rallied from a game down to deliver to the tiebreaking point and lead Princeton to a 5-4 win over Yale in a key Ivy League men's squash match. The victory sets up a showdown next Sunday in Princeton against Harvard for the Ivy League title, which Princeton wrestled away from the Crimson after a 10-year run.

TRINITY WINS 5-4 AGAINST HARVARD IN MEN's AND WOMEN's. Women's team could claim their first National Championship
(By Ron Beck)

Once again Trinity and Harvard gathered in the cauldron of the Harvard Squash Courts to provide drama, entertainment, heart, guts, and suspense for 1000 or so totally exhuberent Harvard fans.

First on court were the women, with Harvard ranked first but Trinity having worked all year for this opportunity to engineer the big upset. Trinity's #1, Amina Helal, scored a surprisingly easy victory over Harvard's Louisa Hall.

The Harvard crowd, packed into the concrete stands and noisily waving crimson flags, fed energy to the Harvard team. Trinity's early confidence builder melted away and the two teams finally stood at 4 matches each with only two competitors on court, Trinity's Clare Austin and Harvard's Virginia Brown.

Austin, the match-tough freshman, from England, silenced the crowd with a gutsy four game victory that gave the Trinity women the upset win. With Penn's win over Princeton on Jan 31st, Trinity is a commanding position to earn the National Championship. Their only possible roadblock is possible spoiler Princeton who Trinity plays on February 24th. The Princeton women have already lost to both Penn and Brown but potentially could give both Trinity and Harvard trouble.

OVERCOMING A HANDICAP
With energy and emotions high, the Harvard men took the stage hoping to even the score for the day.

Trinity arrived in Cambridge with a huge handicap - their top player John Smith and their ninth player, Bhappu, were both at home with the flu.

"I didn't think we could do it with that handicap," said Trinity coach Paul Assaiante. "The Harvard crowd was totally stirred up, noisy, with red flags waving everywhere. There was so much energy for the Harvard players to feed on, we would have to be very lucky to come away with the win."

HARVARD ON THE EDGE
With the match standing at two wins apiece, Gray Witchell put Harvard up 3 matches to 2 with three left to play.

Harvard #2, Pete Karlen, had said before the match, " we are gonna pull it off this year... ." Peter did, earning a surprisingly decisive 3-game victory over Lafike Ragonste at the #2 position.

But at that point, Trinity #1 Michael Ferreira put forth a focused and masterful effort, taking home a 3-0 win. Then when Juneja gained a four game win over Dylan Patterson, the final match between and Nick Kyme became anticlimatic.

"This was a really special win for us... really emotional" said Paul Assaiante.
