TORONTO— Education student Trevor Borland of Winnipeg taught Andrew Jones of London, Ont., a lesson Sunday in winning the men’s final 9-2, 9-1, 9-3 Sunday at the first ever Canadian universities and colleges squash championships. Borland, representing the University of Manitoba, didn’t lose a game in his four matches in the tournament which started Friday at the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club.
Jones, 20, was representing Western University. "I’ve been ill most of the year so I wasn’t sure how fit I was going to be," said Borland, 24, who also coaches Manitoba’s national junior team. "But I had been feeling better the last couple of weeks and my lungs and stuff felt pretty good." Cameron Naushahi of Toronto, playing for York University, won the bronze medal.
Another York student, world university
champion Marnie Baizley,
originally
from Winnipeg, won the women’s final defeating Stephanie Richardson of the
University of Toronto 9-2, 10-8, 8-10, 4-9, 9-6 in a match that lasted over
an hour.
"I’m very disappointed," said Richardson, who is completing her MBA this year. "I played well but for both of us it’s been hard to train as much as we would like because of school. I wasn’t on early in the match but for me to win I have to go for shots and not just play up and down." Baizley, a second-year law student is ranked 40th in the world and is the daughter of Don Baizley, an NHL hockey agent. Organizers were delighted with the turnout for the tournament in particular with the number of out of province players who competed.
