Last season saw Cal squash drop from a promising 22 to a disappointing 32 in the men’s NISRA rankings.

After #1, Stuart Morgan, departed midway through the season, the Golden Bears were forced to move each man up one position to make up for the missing strength at #1.

However, this year, with an athletic crop of new members including Jehan Engineer of San Francisco, Fernando Siu, former #2 junior tennis player of Peru, Christian Munkvold, former national handball player of Norway, and Wael Salem of Egypt, the University of California Berkeley is once again looking optimistic and is hungry to retain their ranks among the nation’s top 20.

Returning to the California Golden Bear is Captain and #2, Manu Vaish, a senior who brings leadership to this young club. Also from last year’s squad, #3 Harlan Yu, #4 Sunny Khan, #5 Ben Durie, and #7 Adam Angsten all bring experience and enthusiasm to this youthful team. After a disappointing loss to cross-town rival Stanford to open the season, Cal Berkeley traveled to Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, where they upset the Crimson Tide 7-2, lost to a much improved St. Lawrence team 5-4, lost (a Scrimmage) to a deep Tufts squad 6-3, and upended Hamilton 5-4 (in another scrimmage). After a successful road trip where the top three lost a total of just two out of twelve matches, the Golden Bear is poised to steal the spotlight from Stanford as collegiate squash’s best in the west.
