University of Rochester Squash continues to blossom under the guidance of Coach Chris O’Brien. With a combination of veteran players and a few new arrivals, the Yellowjackets look to improve their ranking by breaking into the top twenty from their current position in the NISRA rankings.

Rochester's veteran players continue to improve while spreading their knowledge of the game to the next generation of Rochester squash. This season’s line-up is comprised of veteran players in six of the top seven spots. Their leadership and experience will be instrumental in pulling in ahead of those teams ranked just below Rochester in the NISRA standings.

Rochester’s men team is looking forward to matches against Hamilton and Colgate in early December as well as their second meeting at the Rochester Round Robin, the first weekend in February. Both the Yale and Navy Round Robins will be big weekends for Rochester as they look to gain experience from matches against teams such as the host Bulldogs, while capitalizing on opportunities to improve their ranking against teams such as Stanford and Connecticut College.

The Yellowjackets positive outlook on the upcoming season, is based on their stable of experienced players all returning to the line-up with added depth from the arrival of three new members to the squad. Senior Captain Allen Fitzsimmons retains his position at the top of Rochester’s ladder, followed by sophomore Gen Izumida from Tabor Academy. We expect these two players to push each other as well as the team to a higher level of competition. Junior Dave Easwaran looks to establish himself as a strong contributing factor at the third position, where he is supported directly by incoming freshman Bill Ferzoco, also a product of Tabor Academy. The heart of Rochester’s ladder consists of senior Peter Avitable, junior Dave Sokoloff, and junior Drew Chapman whose experience will be drawn on if Rochester wishes to achieve positive results in closely contested matches against teams of similar caliber.

The two newest members to the varsity squad are sophomore Do Ho Yoo of Korea, by way of the St. Georges School and thier aforementioned freshman recruit Bill Ferzoco. Yoo enters the line-up at the eighth position and looks to impose his game on his adversaries, while Ferzoco checks in at the #4 slot, looking to develop winning ways in the world of collegiate squash.

Coach O’Brien, along with his new assistant coach Mark Mijangos and coach emeritus Peter Lyman have begun a new women’s club this season and are looking forward to developing it into a strong varsity program in the years to come. The numbers of women participating in the club from it inception has displayed a passion and excitement for squash at the University of Rochester.
