MIT, home of may of
the world's finest budding engineers, is also an enthusiastic and
diverse hotbed of participatory sports. Squash has always been a
mainstay of the MIT sports curriculum, but for the past decade has
labored in increasingly dingy and anachronistic facilities.
Enter the new era of MIT squash.
MIT starts the 02-03 season with sparkling new courts
and in an enthusiastic rebuilding mode. Having risen to a #19 finish
in the final team rankings last year, MIT squash will again find
itself in a rebuilding mode this season.
Individual losses were significant (4 players out
of the top 7) especially
at positions #2 Simon Bradbury and #5 Rob Finn.
Fortunately for the engineers, #1 Kunal Surana
and #3 Naveen Goela return to anchor the top of the line-up. Kunal
Surana finished a very successful '02 campaign at #41 in the NISRA
singles rankings. He returns as MIT's #1 player. Naveen, who hails
from Andover, has a year of college competition now under his belt.
He posted a strong record last year playing at the #3 spot . He
will move up the ladder to fill the vacated #2 position this season.
And, playing in the recently completed Zesiger Center squash facility
should help to energize this year's squad.
Key Recruits are Adam Bushashia who joins the MIT
squad as the top freshman recruit. He played the #1 position for
the Brooks School last season.
