SAINTS, STATESMEN
WIN UCAA TITLES
St. Lawrence University's women's squash team and Hobart College's men's
team won the first Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association squash championships
Sunday as each swept the field in the league's first tournament conducted
at the Robie Squash Center at St. Lawrence.
St. Lawrence, looking
to break the top ten nationally this season, dispatched all
three of its conference opponents by 9-0 scores to win the women's championship.
The Saints lost only four games en route to their tournament championship.
Saint
senior Gigi Tuten was a perfect 9-0 in her three matches and allowed only
14 points
to be scored against her, seven of them in one game with William Smith's
Kinsey
Cruice. Tuten established the Saint career win record with 46 with her
three match
sweep. A trio of first- year players also stood out for the Saints as
Katia Stipinovich
went 3-0 at number two, allowing just 28 points, Ashley Eldredge was 3-0
at number
three and allowed just 20 points and Erin Hart was 3-0 at number nine.
Hobart, ranked 12th
among men's teams in the pre-season poll, was nearly perfect
as well as it lost only one of 36 matches en route its title. The Statesmen
lost
only one game in sweeping past St. Lawrence, Vassar and Rochester 9-0
before finally
ceding a point in a 8-1 win over Hamilton. Hobart number one Tejvir Rathore
had
an impressive tournament as he swept through his matches allowing just
17 points
in 12 games. Richard Reuther, playing number eight, also kept the opponent
point
totals down, allowing just five points per match in all four of his 3-0
wins.
Vassar, which beat William Smith 6-3 and Hamilton 9-0 in addition to its
9-0 loss
to St. Lawrence, finished second among women's teams with a 2-1 record
while William Smith (1-2) was third and Hamilton (0-3) fourth.
The race for second
was a tight one in the men's tournament as St. Lawrence could
have forced a three-way tie for second with a win over Rochester in the
final men's
match of the tournament. Rochester prevailed in that one 5-4, with three
of the
matches going a full five games in a nip and tuck battle up and down the
lineup
to take second at 3-1 while Hamilton, which also downed the Saints 5-4
in another
nail-biter finished third with a 2-2 record, the Saints were fourth at
1-3 and Vassar
was fifth at 0-4.
