The Smith Squash Squad has a lot of reason for optimism coming into the 2002-03 season. They boast a facility with five brand new ASB courts at their home base in Northampton, Mass. They ended up last year with the season's most improved record, having improved from #27 in mid December to #22 at the finals 2002 rankings. The Smith nine hope for similar results in the upcoming campaign.

Smith finished the 2001-02 regular season ranked in dead last but bounded out of the basement to finish a commendable 6th place in "C" Division (22nd) at last season's Howe Cup.

As usual on a team with little or no pre-college squash experience the team improved steadily over the season. A season opening 8-1 loss to archrival MHC was turned around with a home 5-4 win on Jan. 16 and a 6-3 win at the 7 Sister's Championship a week later. Smith lost all matches at their own Invitational including 7-2 to Hamilton and 5-4 to Wesleyan. Three days later the team turned around and beat Wesleyan 5-4, and two weeks later avenged their loss to Hamilton by beating them 5-4 on the Saturday at Howe Cup - a match where everyone played great. Other signs of improvement included the matches against Conn College 0-9, to 2-7, to 3-6 at Howe Cup - a match that could have gone either way.

This year the team is looking for the same pattern of "zero to hero(ine)" improvement, especially as the only two players with pre-college squash experience, #1 Jean Lee and #2 Krittika Jarupanich are Junior Year Abroad. With a collective total of only 6 years squash experience on a squad of 15 Smith is looking to do some damage (late season damage that is :) to their more experienced peers. Look for sophomore Ashley Kilgore at the #1 spot to lead the way with her excellent technique and fairplay. Coach Tim Bacon is expecting the team to finish near the top of Division D at Howe Cup or if everything goes well to sneak into the bottom of Division C.
