			Agarwal Leads Lady Jeffs

			2001-02 Women's Squash Outlook by Amherst Sports Information Department, Dec 3 2001 10th RANKED AMHERST WOMEN'S SQUASH SET FOR SEASON-OPENER AMHERST, MA- Ranked 10th in the nation despite losing a trio of top players to graduation, the Amherst College women's squash team is set for its season opener Tuesday night at Harvard University against unranked Tufts. Head coach Jackie Bagwell will look to juniors Roopali Agarwal and Susanna Burke to carry the Jeffs through yet another challenging schedule. 2000-01: A LOOK BACK The 2000-01 team had another successful season, recording a 13-10 record, despite playing some of the top competition in the nation. The Jeffs culminated their season with a third place finish in the B Division of the Howe Cup. Overall, they finished with a ranking of 11th in the nation by the Women's Intercollegiate Squash Association (WISA). Amherst endured some tough defeats to eventual national champion Harvard University and runner-up Trinity College, but fared well in its division, besting Middlebury, Bates and Colby Colleges in the Howe Cup quarterfinals. In addition, the Jeffs topped Wesleyan, 9-0, in procuring a second place finish in the Little Three Tournament. One of only two seniors on the squad, co-captain Vanessa Champion was honored as a WISA Scholar-Athlete, while classmate and fellow captain, K.C. Giese, anchored the team as its No. 1 singles player. Agarwal was consistent throughout the season as the No. 2 seed, while Burke battled from the No. 4 slot. 2001-02: A LOOK AHEAD Due to graduation, the Amherst women's squash team will have to do without two of their top three players this season. Thanks to last year's experience facing off against top-ranked opponents, the Jeffs remain a formidable opponent. The leading returner and contender for the position as the team's top seed is Agarwal, who was a stalwart in the No. 2 spot last season, while Burke will look to move up from No. 4. Tara Kenney fared well as a first-year last season, while junior Katie Alburger won some key matches for the Jeffs. Other returners from the top nine returning flight are sophomore Emily Stark and juniors Lindsay Snyder and Mary Frances Ford. Once again, Amherst will play the best intercollegiate competition New England has to offer , including defending national champion Harvard University, as well as runner-up Trinity College and traditional rival Williams College.
