In 2001-02, the Trinity College women's squash program will welcome back eight starters from last year's WISA Dual Match Championship team, which completed the best seasons in the program's history.

Led by senior co-captains Mollie Anderson and Samantha Lewins, as well as sophomore No. 1 Amina Helal, the Bantam women's squash program, under the direction of Head Coach Wendy Bartlett (18th season, 162-56), will strive toward the only goal remaining to achieve: The Howe Cup Championship title.

The Bantams will miss four-time All-American and 2000 Constable Tournament champion Janine Thompson, who was lost to graduation after completing the finest career of any Bantam women's squash career. Thompson played No.1 for three years, before yielding to last year's freshman phenom Helal in mid-season. Helal returns with an All-American season under her belt and a one-year record of 17-3 (7-1 in dual matches).

Balance exists among the four classes with two seniors, two juniors, and four sophomores among the top returning starters. Lewins, the College's Junior Female Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2000-01, is back for her senior campaign after two straight All-American seasons, while Anderson has posted the most career wins of any returning Bantam (39-18 career mark).

Clare Austin leads the junior class with a stellar 31-7 career record. Classmates Amy Brown, Amanda Todd, and Suzanne Schwartz all have varsity experience, particularly Brown who has improved considerably playing at the No. 9 position over her first two seasons.

The sophomore class looks to build on the unprecedented success of a year ago, including that of Helal, as well as All-American selection Pam Saunders, Carolynne Minkowski, and Elizabeth Frank. Saunders posted a 12-6 mark playing at the No. 3 position, while Minkowski and Frank combined for a 19-8 record at the middle spots.

Classmate Barbara Escobar contributed in her rookie season as well. She will compete with yet another influx of talent as three premier squash players are among the class of 2005. Bartlett is excited about the upcoming season, particularly with the momentum gained from last season's WISA Dual Match title and best ever second-place finish at the Howe Cup. "We have veteran players who have experienced success and know what it takes to achieve it," she says. "It will be key for us to mix in a talented incoming freshman class with the returning players to keep our success going this season and in the years ahead."
