Vassar College Men Begin Long Road

2001-02 Men's Squash Outlook
by Michael Levin, Vassar College

The 2001-2002 Vassar Brewers will face a long road in their quest for a third consecutive New York State Championship.

The Brewers lost last year’s top player Andrew Schmidt to graduation and another top performer, Tim Shea, is JYA until second semester. To capture a third-consecutive New York State title, Vassar will have to rely heavily on its underclassmen, including four freshmen. While young, the Brewers do not lack in experience.

Many of the team’s returners saw a lot of action in last year’s 9-12 campaign, a season that culminated with a victory over California at Berkeley in the Summers Championship. The victory avenged an earlier loss. This year’s schedule includes many stern tests. The tough slate culminates with games against top-10 finishers Dartmouth and Williams within a two-week stretch.

To meet the challenge, coach Jane Parker instituted a new off-season regimen. “We started training earlier, because we are an experienced, but younger group.” While some growing pains are to be anticipated, Parker expects “a consistent effort throughout.”
