Yale Gets #3 Tourney Seed with 7-2 Win over Harvard Men

Feb 13th , New Haven CT - For the Yale Bulldogs, playing in front of a large and lively home crowd, this last regular season match of the 2007-08 campaign was worth waiting for, for both the men's and women's varsity squash teams.

HISTORIC DOUBLE WIN
Yale has enjoyed some level of success against Harvard squash over the years, but as the Yale sports info department scurried to scour the record books, it appears that this is the first time that Yale's men and women's teams have beaten Harvard the same season.

For the women, the victory was expected and not completely unusual, since the Yale women enjoyed a three year run as national champions recently. But for the Yale men, it was their first victory over Harvard since wins in 2002 and 2003. The Yale men scored a dominant 7-2 win over the Harvard Crimson Wednesday evening at the Brady Squash Center. The Bulldogs finish the regular season 11-2 (5-1 Ivy), second place in the Ancient Eight behind Princeton.

In both contests, the men's and the women's, Yale started the evening with a 4-0 lead, then coasting home to victory. So although not suspenseful, the wins were important and well contested ones.

The bottom of the Eli lineup came up huge, putting together a 4-0 record. No. 6 Moshe Sarfaty beat J. Reed Endresen, 3-0 (9-4, 9-6, 9-5), No. 7 Todd Ruth dominated Franklin Cohen, 3-0 (9-1, 9-7, 9-1), No. 8 Colin Campbell handily defeated Ned Reeves, 3-0 (9-1, 9-1, 9-2), and No. 9 Naishadh Lalwani cruised to a victory over Alastair Smith, 3-0 (9-3, 10-8, 9-4).

The most stirring performance of the night, however, came from No. 2 Aaron Fuchs. Fuchs quickly fell behind two games to Verdi DiSesa before winning a tight 10-8 third game. Fuchs then rolled 9-0, 9-0 to pick up the win for Yale.

No. 3 John Fulham and No. 4 Francis Johnson picked up the final two wins of the night. Fulham downed Richard Hill, 3-0 (9-7, 9-1, 9-2) and Johnson beat Niko Hrdy, 3-1 (6-9, 9-6, 9-7, 9-5).

The victory propelled the Bulldogs into the No. 3 seed in this weekend's CSA Championships. Yale will face the No. 6 Penn Quakers on Friday at 11:30 a.m. in Cambridge.

On the women's side, the margin of victory was 6-3, a decisive margin especially considering Harvard's very close 5-4 loss to National #1 Penn last weekend in Cambridge.

Yale's top three made quick work of their Crimson foes. No. 1 Miranda Ranieri defeated June Tiong, 3-1 (9-5, 4-9, 9-4, 9-5), No. 2 Logan Greer downed Alisha Mashruwala, 3-1 (9-3, 9-1, 2-9, 9-0), and No. 3 Sarah Toomey handled Katherine O'Donnell, 3-1 (9-7, 7-9, 9-4, 9-0).

The overall match hinged on two extremely competitive contests that could have gone either way. No. 9 Eli Hill battled Sandra Mumanachit in an epic match, eventually pulling out a win, 3-2 (0-9, 10-8, 9-4, 7-9, 9-7). No. 6 Jessica Balderston won her match against Ali Zindman in three games, but had to battle her opponent in 10-8, 9-6, 10-8 wins.

No. 4 Alia Aziz, who has come back strongly this season after a summer knee injury, picked up the final win for the Bulldogs, over Johanna Snyder, 3-2 (6-9, 10-8, 9-2, 3-9, 9-4).

With the win, the Bulldogs will likely pick up the No. 3 seed for next week's Howe Cup in Princeton, pending results from this weekend.
