Five-Team Event Signals Growth of Squash
in the Midwest
Finals of Big Ten Championship
The
2004-05 Big Ten Championships marked a milestone for squash in one
of the most well-known college athletic leagues. For the first season
ever, five of the big ten schools are fielding legitemate 9-man
teams for the CSA intercollegiate season, and all four out-of-town
teams made the snowy journey to Chicago to compete in this, the
most serious and biggest ever Big Ten Squash Championships.
Northwestern,
which has been fielding a squash team for the longest time period,
not surprisingly won the event, but each of Northwestern's opponents
for the weekend managed to pick up at least one point, and the Purdue-Notre
Dame match was especially competitive.
It
was a big weekend for squash in Chicago, coming on the same weekend
as the Windy City Open in Chicago, a weekend in which some 15 inches
of snow were dumped in the Chicago area.
The
event was marked by mention in a large feature article published
in the Chicago Tribune on Sunday.
In
the finals, Northwestern beat Penn State 7-2 to captures in Big
Ten title.
At #1, Edward Gadient was dominant with a 9-3, 9-6,
9-3 win ove Adam Finn. Penn State won at #2 and #3, with Aditya
Shastri and Pete Ishihara winning each of their matches 3-0. Northwestern
won at all other positions 3-0.
