Second Women's CSA Nail-biter of the Week goes to Brown

Feb 1st, Brown U, Providence RI -

The Brown Bears had the crowd as a big booster, even as the clock moved past 10 and then 11.

The final stroke of a 3 1/4 hour match was struck at 11:05pm by Kali Schellenberg, Brown's number seven, who won in the fifth by a close nine to six tally, giving the Bears an exciting and memorable win against the visiting Stanford team led by Mark Talbott - a contest between two teams as evenly matched as they could be.

The packed gallery was on the edge of their seats throughout the whole see-sawing contest. Four matches (at positions 4, 6, 7 and 8) went to five with Brown winning three of them. The closest match of the evening pitted Brown Freshman Sophie Scherl against Stanford Freshman Shannon Harrington. Harrington bravely fought off 2 match balls in the fourth to win that game 10-9 and knot the score at two. Scherl then mirrored that feat at 9-8 and 9-9 in the fifth. Finally the match was won by Scherl and the Bears and Cardinals had 3 matches each. Three matches remained on court. Charlotte Steel of Brown at #3 was overpowered by an energetic Sam Buechner from Stanford, 3-0.  Four three to Stanford.

Brown had to win the last two remaining matches. Captain Minoo Fadaifard of Brown was in the fourth game 2-1 up playing against Stanford's experienced Brooks Riley. Schellenberg of Brown was 2-0 up against the spirited Pam Sherwood who was about to fight back and win the next two games.  Fadaifard played flawlessly to win 3-1 and set the stage for the dramatic win by Schellenberg at #7.

Stanford, fielding several east-coast players, had their fans in house too. Both sets of fans were enthralled by the competition, athleticism and the fantastic spirit the match was played in. Team squash at its very best and a collegiate gem of a squash match.
