Yale
started its season with a resounding 9-0 win against Stanford
on Friday at the Brady Squash Center. Facing former Yale
coach Mark
Talbott for the first time, the Bulldogs dropped only
one game in their victory.
Prior to the match, Richard Cooley,
Yale Class of '44, was honored as part of the Blue Leadership
Ball and the George H.W. Bush Lifetime of Leadership Awards.
He captained the squash team before leaving Yale in 1943
to joined the military service. After losing his right arm
in World War II, Cooley became a national champion in squash
- left-handed - during the 1950s.
"It's an honor to be on the court with Dick today," said
Mark Talbott, describing him as "a remarkable human being."
Yale Freshman Logan
Greer kicked things off on the Nicholas F. Brady '52
Exhibition Court, playing No. 2 in her first college match.
She got off to a hot start against Stanford's Katy Brewster,
cruising to a 9-4 victory in the first game. After falling
behind 2-1 in the second game, Greer won seven straight points,
eventually taking the game, 9-3. A 9-6 win in the third
completed the 3-0 victory.
Senior Yale captain Miranda
Ranieri also scored an impressive three-game win. After
dominating the first game 9-1 against Lily Lorentzen, she,
too, fell behind 2-1 in the second game before winning
seven straight points. Ranieri took the last two games
by 9-6 scores to defeat Stanford's No. 1.
After the Thanksgiving break,
the Bulldogs will begin their Ivy League schedule against
Penn in Philadelphia on Dec. 1. The Quakers defeated Princeton
to win the Ivy Scrimmage last weekend.
