| Toronto Women extend unbeaten OUA
run to 26 games
The Varsity
Blues Women's squash team got off to great start in the defence
of their OUA title. Two wins over their nearest rivals McMaster
and Western by the score of 4-2 ensured that the team's unbeaten
run which extends back to Oct 2002 continued.
In the
opening game against Western, Toronto fielded a mixed team of 3
returning players and 3 rookies. The Blues took an early lead when
Binaifer Kapadia and Shi Hsien Zhu won their games 3-0. Emily Robson
and Edith Chow also wrapped up their games 3-0 but Western struck
back to pick up 2 wins when Jessica Senior defeated Samantha Gowland
3-0 and in the battle of the #1s Kim Farah got by against Karlene
Headley-Cooper 3-1 in a closely fought battle.
In the
second game against last year's beaten finalists McMaster, the U
of T had a tough struggle to maintain their dominance. Rookie Edith
Chow won her 2nd match if the day as did Binaifer Kapadia 3-0. However
the rest of the games were much more difficult. Newcomer Samatha
Gowland's tough initiation to OUA play continued against McMaster's
most experienced player Carly Thompson and Karlene Headley-Cooper
put up a brave struggle against Jenny Hogan losing 3-1. However
the Blues veteran players Julia Hamilton and Emily Robson sealed
the win with two 3-1 victories.
One of
the most encouraging aspects of the day were the exhibition games
played between lower ranked players in all the teams. Against Western,
Toronto won 2-1, while against McMaster the score was 5-1.
Toronto's
next two games are against Queens' and McGill in January 2005 before
defending their title in Toronto on Feb 5 2005.
