University of North Carolina - Club Team Preview

This year looks to be a breakthrough year for the fledgling UNC Squash Team, which now rejoins the CSA for the first time in years. After years of a relatively dormant program, UNC hopes to surprise the field and establish itself as a legitimate club team on the college squash scene. Given that the team consists of an enthusiastic bunch of mostly sophomores and juniors, the experience gained over the course of the year will undoubtedly benefit the future of the program.

Key tests will include numerous matches against other nearby programs. Potential matches against NC State, Davidson, UVA, Washington and Lee, and perhaps even Navy should make for a great season. A trip to DC to compete with GWU and Georgetown could be an intriguing possibility, as well. Matches against UVA and Georgetown should serve as especially important measures as to how our team will stack up nationally. UNC also hopes to cap the season with a successful trip to the CSA Nationals. In all it looks to be a great start for revitalizing squash in North Carolina.

Key Players are: The speedy sophomore Mike Morrill looks to lead a promising group of young, energetic players. Anchored by newcomer Ivan Ng and sophomore Rees Sweeney-Taylor, the top of the UNC ladder should consist of a formidable duo. Meanwhile, Morrill, junior Angelo Coclanis, and seniors Henry Holderness and DJ Perkins should provide solid depth to the top six. The team will likely be rounded out by a host of both newcomers and veterans including seniors Lon Mayer-Salman and Alex Snider, junior Ben Jones,  sophomores Henry Spelman and Doug Debaugh, and freshmen Mike Mian and Zeph Pendleton.
