| Women's Rankings: Deadlock at #12 shows league parity. |
Dec. 17, 2007 - Acton, MA USA. The College association released today the first Bear Stears College Squash women's rankings of the 2007-08 season. With more parity than ever, as the overall level of college squash skills rise, five teams are deadlocked at number 12 after a month and a half of competition. With an improved Stanford team, in their second year of varsity competition, jumping up to number seven in the pre season rankings, it is after number eleven Bates that the deadlock begins. The task of early season rankings in women's college squash is made the more difficult by the prevalence of a first semester abroad for juniors at the NESCAC schools. The gap these players have temporarily left has prevented several of the mid tier teams from displaying their true strength in the early season contests. |

| Men's Rankings: Rochester debuts the 07-08 season at number 14th | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Dec 12, 2007. - Acton, MA USA. The College squash association released today the first Bear Stearns College Squash men's rankings of the 2007-08 season. Surprising nobody, Trinity and Princeton top the tables, with those two powerhouses projected to repeat their 1-2 finish of the past several seasons. Rochester, which has added formidable strength and depth to their already strong lineup, begins the season at number fourteen, probably low for the strenght of their lineup but in line with the CSA early-season rankings approach. The CSA's rankings, are based on a panel of coaches, take a "show-me" approach early each season. Teams are placed based on proven match performance with relatively less weight given to potential based on the individual strengths of team members. Falling in the rankings is Brown, who are in danger of falling into the third division this year and start the season at a generous 15th position. Debuting in the rankings this year are Vermont, a new team which won in its second ever match in competition, a solid win over another newcomer, Bryant University. Also new to the rankings are North Carolina and NC State, who played their first regulation CSA match last month. USC's position, at 29, is worth mention. This is their highest ever ranking position. They have been placed well below Stanford (who start the year at 21), who they defeated 5-4 earlier in the season. But USC used a player judged to be ineligible by the Men's ranking committee, and it was decided to disallow that win for ranking purposes. Nonetheless, even
without that player, USC field a much improved team this year and the
league will be watching their results. |
