The $40,000 EBS DAYTON OPEN
began play tonight with the opening round of the qualifying event.
This World Class Athletic event has the 3rd largest purse of all the
professional squash events held in the United States this year and
it's right here in Dayton Ohio at the Dayton Squash Center (937-885-9701).
Although the main draw lost top seed Thierry Lincou late last week &
then today was hit with the news that the new # 1 seed Anthony Ricketts,
last year's EBS Dayton Open winner, had to withdraw, DAYTON OHIO is excited
to have world class squash back in our area. Squash was recently rated
in FORBES MAGAZINE as the # 1 Sport with highest fitness benefits for
its participants. This is your chance to see what all the excitement is
about. Come join us at the Dayton Squash Center to watch World Class Athletes
compete (contact info below).
Healthy crowds of sponsors & spectators turned out tonight to watch
the 1st round qualifier matches and they were treated to some awesome
squash competition. Matt Jenson& Mikkel Korsbjerg led off the "fight
card" with a spirited 1h15m 4-game match and Mark Heather & Andrew
Whipp provided an entertaining follow-up with another 4 game match that
had the crowd applauding frequently.
Local favorite tonight was Joey Barrington who once went to school with
and trained with Chris Olsen, son of Dayton Squash Center founder Tom
Olsen, at the Millfield School in England, where Joey's famous dad Jonah
is the squash coach. Joey acquitted himself well with a 3-0 win and is
looking forward to a hard fought match with El Hindi tomorrow.
This tournament has grown from a $10,000 to a $40,000 event in only 3
years thanks largely to the sponsorship of a local asset management company
Eubel, Brady & Suttman Asset Management and the support of the Dayton
& Cincinnati squash communities. This year's main draw promises many
closely contested matches based on the bunched rankings of entrants and
the introduction of some tough qualifiers, so our spectators will benefit
by seeing some great squash.
Speaking of spectators, the EBS Dayton Open benefits our Dayton Challenge
junior squash program and many of our area youth, new to squash, will
get to see world class squash competition in their own back yard (no small
feat!). There will also be 125 amateur players in Dayton this weekend
(1/16-1/18) for the REVENGE OF THE BABY BOOMERS & SKILLS tournament.
These players will be crowding the viewing area for the professional semi-finals
& finals along with over 80-100 area patrons & sponsors to watch
world class squash. Over 70% of the participants coming to play in the
Boomers event are from out of town & out of state (including United
States Squash Racquets Association Executive Director Palmer Page!), making
this one of the largest squash events in the USA!
