Kay and Walker Qualify By One Point In The Fifth
In a stunningly successful and amazingly swift return to the competitive fray less than seven months after rupturing his left Achilles tendon in early October, ISDA star Dave Kay teamed with 2001 British Open finalist Chris Walker to qualify their way into the main draw of the $ 80,000 2003 Kellner Cup Friday afternoon.

After dispatching Aussies Shane Coleman and Matt Jensen in a surprisingly dominant three games Thursday night, Kay and Walker barely survived former early-1980's Williams College teammates Tom Harrity and Greg Zaff, 15-11 15-13 12-15 12-15 17-16 in the last round of the qualifying when a Walker forehand cross court forced a tin off Harrity's normally error-proof racquet, thereby enabling Walker and Kay to make good on their fourth match-point of the game.

Walker and Kay had reached the semis of the 2001 Hamilton Cup in their debut performance 19 months back, arriving at this stage via an 18-17 fifth-game win over Jamie Bentley and Michael Pirnak in Denver. Their penchant for playing in airtight matches included a 16-15 fifth-game loss three weeks later in Philadelphia to Clive Leach and Blair Horler, Kay's successor as the head pro at the Union Club, the site of a rematch between these two star-studded duos in the round-of-16 last night (as it had also been of the nail-biter with Harrity and Zaff several hours earlier).

This went to a decisive fifth game as well after a Walker scoring spree earned him
and his teammate the fourth and left them poised for what would have been a
remarkable upset had they been able to close it out. But here the Walker/Kay dream march was finally terminated when Horler and Leach, the fourth seeds in this tournament and winners already this season of ISDA stops in Philadelphia, Toronto and Long Island, got off to an early lead and were able to hang on for a 15-10 victory.

They thereby advanced to this afternoon's quarter-finals, scheduled at the University Club, which will also feature the top three seeded teams, namely No. 1 and three-time Kellner Cup champions Damien Mudge and Gary Waite, No. 2 and
five-time ISDA finalists Willie Hosey and Michael Pirnak and No. 3 and four-time ISDA finalists Viktor Berg and Josh McDonald, all of whom won their opening-round matches in three games last night.

The semis will be at 11:30 and 1:00 at the Union Club tomorrow and the final is set for 7:00 at Racquet & Tennis Monday night.
