National Mixed Doubles Wrapup

An amazing thing happened in early February. Men and women agreed on how to spend a weekend. The common denominator that brought them together? The National Mixed Doubles at the University Club in Boston.

Seventy-eight players competed in the three draws: the Open, 40+ and 50+.

Jay Gillespie and Joyce Davenport narrowly escaped with a win in the 50+, after giving up a 2-0 lead to Fred Duboc and Sara Luther. In the fifth game, the two teams played quite evenly, but Gillespie and Davenport were able to get just enough momentum back and pull off the win.

The 40+ draw saw a similar start to the match between the two teams that ended up finishing on top. William Villari and Cairn Meek were up 2-love against Morris Clothier and Jeanne Blasberg. Like Gillespie and Davenport, they lost the next two games. After jumping out to a 7-1 lead in the fifth, it looked like they too would recover after relinquishing their lead, but it was not to be. Clothier and Blasberg came back to tie it 13-13, at which point Morris called no set, and a couple minutes later the comeback was complete.

ROSEN & KRIZEK WIN OPEN DIVISION
rosen - krizekThe Open draw had one dominant team: David Rosen and Narelle Krizek. The two won all of their matches 3-0.

"We both played very well and Narelle was unbelievable," Rosen said. "We were tested in every match, but were pretty strong throughout."

Last year Krizek won the same event with partner Paul Price. Full-time ISDA players are no longer allowed to compete in the event, which gives some of the second and third tier male players a more realistic chance at victory. For Rosen, who has lost in the finals of the men's doubles national championships three times, the recent win marks his first national title.

The win was also significant for Krizek.

"In 2004 Narelle and (husband) Rob lost in the final on the same court after having four match balls," Rosen explained. "She sort of exercised her demons and played out of her head. On that day, there was nothing our opponents could do. She was just on. The crowd was in awe."
