Wohgemuth & Dean win in San Francisco

Callander/Callander win "B" Doubles

Experience was the difference in the final of the A Draw at the 2008 California State Doubles Championships. For Erik Wohlgemuth and Alex Dean it was their vast experience over the years as a team that helped them to victory against Kevin Jernigan and Bayard Fleitas at the University Club of San Francisco.

“Wohlgemuth and Dean have been together as a team for quite a number of years, so they were the experienced team,” explained John Lau, head pro at the University Club. “Jernigan, even though he is an experienced player just hasn’t been with Fleitas as long. That in my mind is why Wohlgemuth and Dean won, because they have been together for so long, whereas Fleitas and Jernigan haven’t played more than two tournaments together. The match was close, but not that close.”

Just two months ago, Wohlgemuth and Dean won the Pacific Coast Doubles title in Vancouver.

MATCH OF THE TOURNEY
The match of the tournament was in the 65+, when Owen O'Donnell and David O'Neal pushed eventual champions Jerry Bachecki and Ivan Glover to five in what Lau called an extremely well contested match. O'Donnell and O'Neil exceeded their No. 3 seeding finishing second.

In addition to playing in the tournament, O’Donnell also sponsored it. As a member of the Board of Directors for the advocacy group Gatekeepers, O’Donnell has sponsored the California State Doubles for three consecutive years in hopes of bringing attention to the state of the San Francisco Bay.
