MAK KEEPS LOCAL HOPES ALIVE IN HONG KONG OPEN

World No56 Christina Mak will single-handedly lead domestic interest in the 2001 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Squash Open following today's (Monday) final qualifying rounds of the biggest ever presentation of the event, featuring the world's top men and women players. Mak beat England's Kate Allison 9-3 9-7 10-8 and will face Dutch champion Vanessa Atkinson, the 10th seed, in the first round.

Malaysian women's qualifier Tricia Chuah, who defeated Japan's Eri Tsuchida 9-4 9-5 9-3, will face Australia's British Open champion Sarah Fitz-Gerald, the 3rd seed. Top seed in the men's event Jonathon Power, the world No2 from Canada who is seeking his fifth successive final appearance, will meet Pakistan's sole representative in the event Mansoor Zaman - the 21-year-old son of legendary former British Open champion Qamar Zaman, who triumphed 15-13 15-13 15-10 in the final qualifiers over Davide Bianchetti of Italy.
