Good progress, more work to do...
Questions and answers with Peter Marhsall. February 8, 2000. photos below, 1&3 by Debra Tessier, 2&4 by Ron Beck, (© 2000 all rights reserved.)
Squashtalk: Peter, how do you feel about your performance at the TOC 2000.

Peter Marshall: I have to be very pleased with my results this week. I'm really pleased with my win over Paul Johnson, and I thought I played very strongly against Peter Nicol as well.

Squashtalk: Peter, a lot of people thought your marathon match (2 hours twenty minutes) with Paul Johnson was pretty boring squash?

Peter Marshall: Well, that's OK. I executed my game plan against Johnson. I knew I could beat him with a steady, straight game plan and I executed well. I felt pretty good about it.

Squashtalk: Peter, after staying on court with Paul Johnson until going on 12:30 AM in the round of 16, and then having to face off against Peter Nicol before 8 PM the following evening, were you feeling tired from the start? A lot of people thought you looked tired from the outset.

Peter Marshall: No, not really. I felt pretty good... No I wasn't tired. I felt I played Nicol pretty evenly and could have easily won the match. There were a few crucial points that didn't go my way.

Squashtalk: Peter, speaking of crucial points, against Nicol you had a big lead in the third game, with the score 1-all in games. Then Nicol made up the deficit and tied you at 14-all. At that point you called no-set and lost the sudden death point. Did you make a wrong decision there?

Peter Marshall: No, not at all. I was feeling pretty good then. I just wanted to put more pressure on Peter by presenting game point against him. I put the pressure on him but he won that point. If I had to do it again, I'd make the same decision.

Squashtalk: Are you in shape now to play back to back marathons like you just did with Johnson and Nicol.

Peter Marshall: I know I still have a long way to go to get my game up to the top again. But I feel that I'm in pretty good shape now. I wasn't tired this week. (...big grin...)

Squashtalk: Peter, with your past history of severe virus and "chronic fatigue syndrome" do you have to be careful practicing now and are you under Doctor's supervision?

Peter Marshall: No, I'm all on my own. I can pretty much do anything now, as long as it feels good to me. I have to be a bit careful not to overdo it in practice, but I am unrestricted. And I'm getting into pretty good shape (...big grin...)

Squashtalk: What's next?

Peter Marshall: I'll continue working to improve. Next week is the British Nationals.
