...Notes from Greenwich...
By Sarah Fitz-Gerald. January 19-23 2000. (Sarah gives her daily thoughts on her progress through the Greenwich WISPA Open, her third tournament after her comeback began. After a slow start at the British Open in mid December, Sarah played through the qualifier and won last weekends WISPA Glidden Open in Southport Connecticut. -ed)
Jan 23rd: I am absolutely thrilled to have won the Greenwich open 3-1 today over Suzanne Horner, who put up a very spirited fight and a better example of her ability compared to her performance in the Glidden Open last week. The last rally of the match was a real crowd pleaser and a great way to end the womens event. This win continues to boost my confidence for 'The Rosebowl classic from 1-5 February in England.

Jan 22nd: Today was a big test for me and I was pleased with my win today over Natalie Grainger. She is the current World No 4 and a very tough competitor. So this was a true indication of where my game is at this point.

I am looking forward to the final tomorrow with Suzanne Horner, whom I beat last week 3-0. I guess you could say I feel confident.

Jan 21st: Vicky Botwright put up a great fight today and chased absolutely everthing. She was very gritty and deserving of the points she won today. Tomorrow semi final is my biggest challenge of the event and a great opportunity to see exactly where my game is at right now. Natalie Grainger(Eng) is top seed and feeling confident, but I came here to win. I am looking forward to tomorrow's encounter very much.

Jan 20th: After defeating Kym Keevil (Aust) 9-1,9-3,9-2 today I feel confident and am looking forward to my quarter final with Vicky Botwright. This is only my third event since my knee surgery and I am very pleased with my progress up to date.

Today, I manoeuvred Kym around the court well, using my volley and controlling the centre. I feel my game is slowly coming together and I am getting back to my best squash.

Jan 19th: I wasn't entirely sure about how I would play this week, after the tournament last weekend. I worked hard all week to get ready, but you can never know until you get onto court. I am pleased to have put it all together on court anddefeated Shelley Kitchen of New Zealand 3-0 and to have qualified for the Greenwich Open. Shelley is a talented young player with a lot of potential. Tomorrow, I have drawn Kym Keevil from Australia, but I look forward to the match and the opportunity to earn world ranking points.
