Junior Women's Website]
The
world’s best female under 19 squash players gathered today at the
squash complex at the Cairo stadium to play the first and second round
of the women’s world juniors. All of the seeded players, except
one, cruised through their matches to advance to the third round.
CANADIAN
SUCCESS
Miranda Ranieri from Canada created the first major upset in the tournament
when she outplayed and defeated the Spanish number one and the 5/8 seed
Margaux Moros-Pitarch in the second round. Although the match looked like
it was going to quickly end with the predicted one sided result, when
Moros-Pitarch won the first game 9-0 with ease, the determined Canadian
quickly turned the match to her favor. Ranieri won the next three games
9-5,9-3 and 9-7. The Canadian will now face Scotland’s Lauren Gray
which will surely be an interesting match.
AMERICANS
FALTER
The American team had five players in the draw but only one managed to
get past the first day. Many unforced errors and perhaps lack of experience
were the main cause of this. Claire Rein-Weston was the only American
to advance to the third round. She played solid squash mixing basic play
with occasional drop shot winners to beat Scotland’s Clair Kidd
3-0, then Malaysia’s Sally Looi.
Rein-Weston’s
match with the Malaysian was a huge battle in which the American emerged
victorious in five games, 10-8 in the fifth, proving how well she could
keep her calm and play those drop shot winners under mental and physical
pressure.
TINY
WILLMOTT WINS
Perhaps the highlight of the day came from England’s Rachel Willmott
who won both of her matches today and advanced to the third round. Wilmott
has just turned fifteen and appears to be shorter than five inches, but
the level of her squash is well beyond her age and size. In her first
match she faced New Zealand’s McDonald. In a match that looked like
a fight between David and Goliath. Wilmott was too good for McDonald who
was almost three times her size and defeated her in straight games. Wimott
produced the second upset of the day when she beat US’s number 1,
Lorentzen in four games.
Loretzen
lost the first the game but came back strong and looked like she was coming
back to win when she won the second game 9-1. However, the talented English
girl was more patient, and appeared to more fit than Loretzen, and won
the third and fourth game 9-6 and 9-0. Wilmott is a future star and will
surely be a main contender in the world juniors 2005. Wilmott’s
match tomorrow with Egypt’s Nehal Yehia will surely be an interesting
match with a high level of squash being played by both players.
The tournament’s
first day has come to an end. Tomorrow the girls start again in the tournament’s
third round. It will be a busy day at the Cairo Squash Center.
