WAH PROVIDES EXCITEMENT
The second day of the women’s world juniors produced two, almost three, upsets in the tournament’s third round. The match of the day was also the first the match played at the Cairo staduim’s centre court. The second seed Aussie, Kasey Brown, faced Malaysia’s Yoke Wah. On paper this match was an easy walk through for the Aussie. However, the young Malaysian had a few surprises for her opponent and the crowd. The second seed looked shaky from the start and the Malaysian took advantage and won the first game 9-6.

The Malaysian’s speed and footwork reminded me of the last 2001’s women’s junior champion, Nicol David, covering the court well and using her racket skills to put Brown under pressure. Brown came back to win the next two games playing aggressive, smart squash.

Signs of fatigue had started to show up on the Aussie and the Malaysian used this to her advantage to win the fourth game and tie the match at 2-2. By then both players were exhausted and it was now more of a test for the players’ mental strength. The Aussie looked more determined than ever and after 69 minutes managed to outlast Yoke Wah and advance to the last 16. Still, the Malaysian had put on a spectacular performance that left me wondering why the Malaysian was left unseeded.

REDDY AND OSAMA SHINE THROUGH
The two upsets of the day came from India’s Reddy and Egypt’s Osama. Reddy played brilliant squash to eliminate the 5/8 seed, England’s Emma Beddoes in four games. Osama was the cause of the second upset of the day when she defeated New Zealand’s McLeod, the 9/16 seed. Although Osama won in three games the match was definitely much closer than the score suggests.

The Egyptian had the advantage of the home court and crowd that got louder and louder is the match came to an end when the two girls were tied at 8-8 in the third game. Unfortunately, the match ended in a not so classy fashion when Osama’s back swing landed on McLeod’s mouth resulting in severe bleeding that left everyone shocked. According to the rules if a player unintentionally hits their opponent with their back swing the player is awarded a stroke, and that’s what happened. Osama was awarded a stroke to win the match.

REIN WESTON FALLS BACK
Rein Weston, the only American player still in the draw played modest squash today and lost in three against Australia’s Petra Hughes. Looking a little tired from playing eight games the previous day, the American couldn’t keep up with the Australian’s high pace and was more on the defensive. The rest of the US team played in the plate and all managed to win their matches with relative ease.

CANADA'S RANIERI LASTS THROUGH
Canada’s Miranda Ranieri continued her impressive performance this tournament after beating Scotland Lauren Gray. Ranieri was down two games to one but came back strong to win the fourth and fifth game to advance to the last 16. She will now face England’s Lauren Siddall and has a much better chance to advance to the quarter finals than her team mate, Kyla Grigg, who will be facing Omneya Abdel Kawy, the number one seeded Egyptian.

The last 16 players remaining are all talented and the matches tomorrow will surely be filled with a high level of competitiveness as most of the players’ squash level are very close, with the exception of one or two player.
