Eight matches, two of them being major upsets, were played today in the tournament’s third round. By the end of the day Egypt had an astonishing number of players advancing to the quarter finals, six out of the eight, leaving two spaces — one for India’s Chinappa and the other for England’s Lauren Sidall.

BADR AND HUGHS IN BRUTAL BATTLE
In an exciting five game thriller Egypt’s Sara Badr and Australia’s Peta Hughes kicked off the day’s matches. Both players produce aggressive squash and have the fitness to back it up. The Egyptian won the first but then lost the second and third. Badr came back in the fourth to tie the match at two games all.

LOST FOCUS FOR AUSSIE
The fifth looked like it was going to be a huge battle between the two players. However, the Aussie seemed to have lost concentration early on in the game, after she disagreed with a referee’s call, and quickly lost the game 9-1.

YOUTHFUL EL WALEILY EARNS UPSET WIN
Raneem El Waleily produced the first major upset of the day when she beat 3/4 seed and England’s number one player, Susie Pierrepont. The three time British Junior Open champion, (only fifteen years old), played remarkable squash hitting winners from every where. Pierrepoint lost the first game 9-4 and seemed to be caught off guard by a string of El Waleily winners so that she quickly trailed 6-0 in the second, to eventually lose the game 9-2.

Pierrepoint focused on a come-back strategy and won the third game. But the talented Egyptian was just too good for her today and closed the match with a beautiful backhand drop shot winner to win the fourth game and the match 9-5.

El Waleily and Badr will head up against each other tomorrow. The two grew up playing squash together and it will surely be an interesting match to watch.

NO SICK DAY
The second upset of the day saw the elimination of the tournament’s second seed, Kasey Brown, by Egypt’s Nehal Yehia. The Aussie couldn’t play at her usual standard as she suffered from a gastro infection and high fever. It looked like the Aussie had put all her energy into the first game to win it 9-1. By she then had no energy left and only managed to win two points in the next three games. Hats off for the Aussie for choosing to play instead of withdrawing.

ANOTHER CANUCK RALLY FALLS SHORT
Canada’s Ranieri’s winning streak came to an end today at the hands of England’s Lauren Sidall. Ranieri almost managed to pull off the win and advance to the quarter finals but came a little too short this time and lost in five.

Perhaps the key to this match lay in the first game which the English player managed to barely win 10-8. Had the Canadian won the first game the match would have probably gone the other way.

Egypt’s Abdel Kawy and El Trabolsy, the number one and 3/4 seeds, had no trouble winning their matches today. Abdel Kawy only lost two points in her match. El Trabolsy’s match was only slightly tougher as she won the first two games fairly easily. After leading 5-0 in the third she lost concentration and the Aussie took advantage and came back strong to lead 8-5. Still, the Egyptian was not to let go of the game so easily and played steady squash to win the game and match. The two will be well rested for their quarterfinal matches.

CLOSE CALL GIVES EGYPT SIXTH QUARTER FINALIST
The sixth Egyptian in the quarter final is Hend Osama. In the closest match of the day Osama and India’s Reddy played five games in which the Egyptian finally prevailed 9-7 in the fifth. Both players made a huge effort and played some fine squash.

With six Egyptians in the quarter final, Egypt’s Women’s coach Ahmed Taher had this to say. “I am ecstatic. This is probably unprecedented in the history of this tournament and I am really proud of my girls. I think that at least three of them will advance to the semi-finals and I am hoping for all four.”

The final match of the day was a battle between the Under 17 British Open champion India’s Chinappa and Under 19 Dutch Open champion, Belgium’s De Ryke. Although the Belgian led 9-8 in both the first and second game she lost both and fell behind 2-0. The Belgian didn’t give up and won the third 9-4. Chinappa, however, wasn’t prepared to let this match go to five and won the fourth 9-5.

WEDNESDAY MATCHUPS
The quarter finals will have two all Egyptian matches. The other two matches see Abdel Kawy head against India’s Chinappa and Egypt’s Yehia against England’s Sidall.
