Abdel Kawy Tops El Trabolsy in Straight Games

It took Abdel Kawy only 23 minutes today to earn her well deserved title of being the by-far-the-best female junior player in the world. The Egyptian squash prodigy was clearly in a class of her own with none of her matches reaching thirty minutes. Abdel Kawy disposed her opponents one by one starting with Switzerland’s Scarlato, and finally ending with team-mate and 3/4 seed El Trabolsy. Runner up in the world juniors 2001, winner of the British Open several times, and already ranked number 12 in the WISPA ranking Abdel Kawy has a been a star in the making, and has a bright career in front of her.

The centre court at the Cairo squash complex was packed with people which included World Squash Federation President, the great Jahangir Khan, and Egypt’s Minister of Youth. The match started as usual with Abdel Kawy taking full control of the game.

Abdel Kawy looked more focused than ever and El Trabolsy didn’t look like her mental attitude was prepared for putting on a performance against the number one seed. Fully armed with a series of winners, Abdel Kawy won the first 9-0.

The second saw a concentration lapse from Abdel Kawy and a change in attitude from El Trabolsy which turned this match into a much more interesting contest. El Trabolsy, perhaps realizing that she does not get to play in the world junior finals every day looked more focused than ever, producing her best squash of the tournament. Hitting the ball hard and deep, along with improved success in retrieving Abel Kay’s shots, El Trabolsy took advantage of Abdel Kawy’s concentration lapse and won six points in a row to take the lead 6-0.

Abdel Kawy, however, refocused and slowly worked herself back into the game playing safe squash and putting her teammate under pressure. A point at a time Abdel Kawy managed to freeze El Trabolsy’s progress and took the second 9-6. El Trabolsy’s continued to put on a good performance in the third but Abdel Kawy was just too good for her and finished off the match in three, with a 9-4 win in the third. Abdel Kawy had declared herself world junior champion.

“This is a dream come true. I have worked hard for this and am thrilled to have won this title,” said Abdel Kawy. “I am looking forward to the team event. I hope for the best and hope to help Egypt win the team title too.”

The tournament had ended in great fashion in an all Egyptian final played in front of their home crowd and at their home court. A huge congratulations to Abdel Kawy and El Trabolsy. The team event starts tomorrow with Egypt being the number one seed. Best of luck to all the teams.

Read here later today for a one-on-one interview with word junior champion Abdel Kawy.
