The top four seeds
had no trouble advancing to the semi finals.
INDIA
HANDLES USA
India’s match with the USA was the closer of the four quarter final
matches. India’s Reddy and Rein Weston started the match off at
the number two spot. Reddy is quick on her feet and has some good racket
skills. Rein Weston tried to move Reddy back and forth in an attempt to
control the “T” but was just outplayed today by India’s
number 2 and lost in three. Playing at the number one spot were Lorentzen
and Chinappa. Lorentzen looked like she had the match in her hands when
she won the first game 9-6, playing safe squash and attacking at the opening.
India’s Under 17 British Open champion, far more experienced, played
with confidence, and backed up with exceptional racket skills, had no
trouble winning the next three games to give India the match and earn
them a place in the quarter final. In the dead rubber Duboc managed to
improve the result for the US with her win at the number 3 spot 2-0 against
India’s Balsekar.
EGYPT MARCHES
ON
Strong favorites, Egypt, had no trouble eliminating Canada from the quarter
finals. Canada’s Ranieri provided the match with some excitement
with her performance against El Trabolsy, the world juniors’ runner
up. Ranieri lost the first but was not to give up. With the ability of
good shot making, and the fitness to back it up, Ranieri fought for every
point that eventually paid off as she won the second 10-8. El Trabolsy
wasn’t prepared to let this match be determined by the crucial third
rubber. She played the same level of squash that had got her to the finals
of the individual event a few days ago and won the next two games 9-6
ad 9-3 to give Egypt a 1-0 lead. The world junior champion, Abdel Kawy
finished the match off when she lost only 3 points against Canada’s
Blumberg. El Waleily gave Egypt the clean sweep when she won her match
in three at the number three spot.
England and Australia,
the number two and three seeds, had no trouble beating Malaysia and Hong
Kong respectively 3-0. They will now go head to head as they battle it
out for a place in the final. Brown and Pierrpoint, Australia’s
and England’s number one, will probably offer the most exciting
match of the day. Originally seeded 2 and ¾ in the individual event,
both players have the potential to win and probably hold the key for the
outcome of the match.
