International Player to Lead Upstate New York Squash Program
Rochester, New York (August 1, 2005) - Martin Heath, a highly-ranked player on the world circuit, has been named the head squash coach at the University of Rochester. His appointment was announced today by George VanderZwaag, the Director of Athletics. "As a world-class player, Martin brings an exceptional squash background to the position of head squash coach at Rochester," said VanderZwaag. "We are very excited about the future of our squash program under Martin's leadership." Heath has touched the sport on many levels - player, coach, writer, and commentator. He joined the Professional Squash Association world circuit in 1993. He spent six consecutive years in the World's top 10 ranking, reaching a high of #4. He was a six-time Scottish champion. "I am really looking forward to the challenge of coaching college squash in the USA." Martin Heath told SquashTalk today. "I have had a great PSA career, and this affords me a new challenge that will keep me fully involved with the world of squash that I love." In 2000, Heath became a professional commentator and presenter for various televised squash media outlets, including ESPN, TSN, CBC, BBC, SKY, and The Tennis Channel. He is a monthly columnist for Squash magazine, the largest publication of its type in North America.
Heath told SquashTalk that Rochester is encouraging his continued involvement with squash. "They are fully supportive of my continued involvement in doubles events as time permits," he said. "It will provide some welcome publicity for the U Rochester program, and hopefully help with the process of recruiting a strong team to build for the future." Martin has coached privately for numerous years and helped many individuals achieve their college placements. Heath graduated from the University of Glasgow with a BSc in Physiology and Sports Science. In 2003, he earned a private pilot's license from the Virginia Flight School in Durban, South Africa. In
2004-05, Rochester won the Conroy Division of the College Squash Association
(CSA) Team Championships. The Yellowjackets defeated George Washington
University, 5-4, in the championship match. That win followed victories
over MIT (7-2) and Haverford College (8-1). Overall, the Yellowjackets
were 8-13. The University of Rochester sponsors 22 sports on the intercollegiate
level - 11 for men (including squash) and 11 for women. Rochester competes
in the Liberty League for squash. At the end of the season, the Yellowjackets
take part in the CSA-sponsored team and individual championships. NEW ... Get the New Jonathon Power Instruction Video at the SquashTalk eStore! \ Squashtalk.com
