PARKE CONFRONTS NAGGING PAIN IN ANKLE

August 28 2001 - After a year and a half of aggravation from a painful ankle, Simon Parke has decided to have an operation to remove a ‘spur’, a small calcium growth, on the back of his left ankle near the achilles tendon.

"It has been slowing me down and I’ve been taking pain-killers for most tournaments," Parke admitted today. The operation will take place in Preston on September 6th and the recovery period can be from 6-12 weeks. "It is not a major operation, and I shall be able to walk out of the hospital on my own two feet," Parke commented. "And I think I needed a break from squash. I’ve been playing now for 20 years without a break – except when I had testicular cancer and that was an enforced break. I have not hit a squash ball since I played in a fun doubles match at the Super Series in June. I’ve hit lots of tennis balls and golf balls, but not one squash ball."

Parke is aiming to rejoin the pro tour in Mumbai for the World Open in December and start to reverse his slide down the rankings. At the start of this year he was ranked four in the world behind Peter Nicol, Jonathon Power and Ahmed Barada. But there has been an noticeable decline in his form, from a high-spot when he narrowly lost to Peter Nicol in the final of the 2000 Super Series, one of the greatest finals of recent years. In this year’s Super Series he was simply unable to compete at the same level.

He is now ranked seven in the world and could drop even further due to non-participation in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Open and the up coming Al Ahram in Cairo. "I am already beginning to feel hungry to get back on the court again and I really want to be ready for the Commonwealth Games in Manchester next year," Parke said
