Peter Marshall strong in comeback

August 2, 2001-

LINCOU LEAPS TO SECOND SUCCESSIVE FINAL IN SOUTH AFRICA
Six days after reaching the final of the Hong Kong Open unseeded, Frenchman Thierry Lincou has fought through to the final of the $50,000 Milo South African Squash Challenge after defeating Egypt's 7th seed Amr Shabana 15-12 15-10 15-7 in the semi-finals in Johannesburg. Earlier the third seed from Marseilles, ranked 20 in the world, had scrambled back from 2-0 down against Joseph Kneipp before beating the Australian 17-15 in the fifth game.

Shabana too had survived a five-game quarter-final thriller, again coming through 17-15 in the final game to triumph over England's top seed Chris Walker. Lincou will face stiff local opposition in the final from Rodney Durbach, the 8th seed from Potchefstroom who upset Egypt's No2 seed Omar Elborolossy 15-12 11-15 15-12 15-14 in the other semi-final.

In the quarter-final, the 29-year-old world No29 eliminated England's Peter Marshall 15-13 15-7 15-6. Marshall, the former world No2 and only qualifier to reach the last eight, was making his PSA Tour comeback after a six-month lay-off in which he underwent surgery to his back. Remarkably, it was the exactly the same operation undergone by his compatriot Cassie Campion, the former world No1 - conducted by the same surgeon and at the same Nottingham hospital.
