Record Clean Sweep By Malaysia In Squash

Sept 15, 2001-

By Hamdan Saaid PENANG, Sept 15 (Bernama)
-- Malaysia bagged the men's and women's squash team golds here today to make a record clean sweep of the four gold medals at stake for the third consecutive SEA Games. Both teams outclassed their closest rivals Singapore 3-0 in the final round-robin matches at the Penang International Squash Centre in Bukit Dumbar. Individual gold medallist Mohammad Azlan Iskandar sealed the victory for Malaysia when he overcame Singapore's veteran player Peter Hill 9-2, 9-1, 9-7 in 35 minutes in the second tie.

Earlier, Kenneth Low picked up the hosts' opening point with a 9-6, 9-5, 9-1 triumph over Mohammad Rizal Kadir in 26 minutes while Yap Kok Four completed the rout by beating Dermadi Adi 9-2, 9-2, 9-0 in 22 minutes.

The Malaysian women, led by two-time world junior champion and SEA Games gold medallist Nicol David, also ended their campaign on a golden note as they needed just 66 minutes to finish off the Singaporeans. Nicol, ranked 28th in the world, provided the first blow as the fast and energetic Penangite was too good for Singapore's top player Della Lee. She overpowered her opponent 9-1, 9-3, 9-3 in just 12 minutes.

Then Sharon Wee, who lost to Nicol in the individual final on Wednesday, sealed the winning point when she outwitted Joannah Yue 9-1, 9-4, 9-4 in 22 minutes.

Third-ranked player Tricia Chuah dropped a game in the final tie against veteran Serene Lee but it did not stop her from winning 9-6, 4-9, 9-6, 9-1 in 32 minutes. With the victory, Malaysia became the first country ever to win all the four gold medals at stake in three consecutive Games following their triumphs in Jakarta (1997) and Bandar Seri Begawan (1999).

The women's team also snatched their fourth gold medal in a row. They first won the gold in the Chiang Mai Games in 1995. The Thai and Philippine teams shared the men's bronze while the women's team bronze went to Indonesia and Thailand. Malaysia also took two silver medals in the individual events through Kenneth and Sharon.

Malaysian team manager Mej (Rtd) S. Maniam said the boys and girls did just fine to beat the Singaporeans today. "They have done a great job to win all their matches in this Games. We are looking forward to a bigger challenge in the World Individual and Team Championships in Melbourne, Australia, next month," he said.
