Isabelle Stoehr out-toughs Botwright, Petersen

by Ron Beck © 2001

Frenchwoman Shows Danes she's ready for Senior Circuit

SATURDAY 22 SEPTEMBER.

[the complete draw]

Isabelle Stoehr
Ellen Petersen

Isabelle Stoehr, the French 21-year-old, has shown her toughness and resiliency on the senior tour. In a formidable show-of-force, world #33 Stoehr collected the Himmerland Tuborg WISPA Squash Open, playing only two less than the maximum possible number of games for the event.

In front of a crowd strongly supporting her opponent, Stoehr came from behind two games to love in the finals against world # 21 Ellen Petersen, eventually tiring the Danish #1 to win in five tough games. It was a disappointing result for Petersen, the local Danish star, but a great senior-tour breakthrough for Isabelle Stoehr.

In the semi final, Stoehr took a two game to love lead over the tournament #1 seed Vicky Botwright. Botwright, world #16 from England, has received more publicity for her on-court attire than her play, and was unable to back up her notoriety with her play. Botwright evened the match at two games all, but Stoehr, who had already showed her mettle with a determined five-game win over Dominique Lloyd-Walters in the first round, took charge in the fifth game and sealed the big upset over Botwright.

Petersen gained the final with a close contest with South Africa's Annelize Nauda. Petersen prevailed 10-8 in the fifth game.
