TOP SEED NICOL WITHDRAWS FROM BRITISH OPEN
The 2000 British Open Squash Championships will get underway today (Wednesday 11 October) at the NIA in Birmingham without 1998 champion and top seed Peter Nicol. The world champion and world No1 from Scotland has withdrawn from the event suffering from a stress fracture of his lower shin.

"Peter is absolutely devastated," said his coach Neil Harvey. "On Sunday he noticed a slight pain in his right leg, and this worsened on Monday. Yesterday afternoon, in significant agony, he was examined by an orthopaedic surgeon and X-ray results showed the stress fracture.

"Peter has never been troubled by this sort of injury before, and he is now being advised to rest for between two and three months. "This is particularly upsetting for Peter, as last week he was brimming with confidence at the prospect of reclaiming the title he lost last year and setting the record straight," Harvey added.

Nicol's withdrawal gives his first round opponent an unexpected birthday present. Egypt's Omar Elborolossy celebrates his 25th birthday today, and will now face 'lucky loser' Bradley Ball, the world No46 from Ipswich in Sussex.
