TWO CANADIANS IN SEMIS AT WORLD UNIVERSITY SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS

PILZEN, Czech Republic--August 12, 2000 PILZEN, Czech Republic--Number-one seed Marnie Baizley of Winnipeg and Kelly Patrick of Edmonton reached semifinals Saturday at the world university squash championships.

In women's play, Baizley, a law student at the University of Toronto currently ranked 37th in the world, defeated Anita Muller of Switzerland 3-0. She'll meet fourth-ranked Laura Hamilton of Britain on Sunday.

In men's competition, second-seed Patrick, an arts history student at the University of Alberta ranked third in Canada, won two matches Saturday. In the round of 16, he defeated Ben Rickaby of Britain 3-0 then in the quarterfinal he eliminated teammate Doug Parent of Calgary 3-0. Parent, an engineering student at the University of Calgary, advanced to the quarterfinal upsetting fifth seed Alexander Bell of France. Patrick meets fourth-seed Gerhard Schedlbauer of Austria in one of the semifinals on Sunday.
