CANADIANS IN BOTH FINALS AT WORLD UNIVERSITY SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS

P PILZEN, Czech Republic--Marnie Baizley of Winnipeg and Kelly Patrick of Edmonton advanced to the gold medal finals Sunday at the world university squash championships.

In women's semifinals, top-seed Baizley, a law student at York University in Toronto, hammered Laura Hamilton of Britain 3-0 (9-5, 9-2, 9-1). She'll face third-seed Wing-yin Chiu of Hong Kong in the final on Monday.

Chiu upset second seed Isabelle Stoehr of France 3-2.

"I'm feeling very strong going into the final," said Baizley, ranked 37th in the world, who hasn't lost a game in three matches so far. "I've been lucky not too have too many tough matches. But Chiu is very good. She's very fit and that could be a factor because the temperature on the court is very hot."

In the men's semis, Patrick, seeded second, hammered Gerhard Schedlbauer of Austria 3-0 (9-4, 9-3, 9-2). He'll meet top-seed Thierry Lincou of France currently ranked eighth in the world and a regular on the Super Series professional circuit.

Lincou defeated Ben Garner of Britain 3-0 in the other semi.

"Lincou is a very talented player but he is beatable," said Patrick, a recent economics graduate at the University of Alberta, who broke is ankle in May and is still feeling some pain on the court. "It'll be a big opportunity for me to play him especially that I'm playing so well right now.
