SQUASH SMARTS HELPS CANADA TO WORLD UNIVERSITY SILVER PILZEN. FRANCE WINS GOLD

August 17, 2000 , Czech Republic-- Canada completed a very successful performance at the world university squash championships Thursday winning the silver medal in the team event. The Canadians lost the final to France 2-1.

They end the competition with a gold and two silver medals. The key match was the opener as Isabelle Stoehr defeated women's singles champion Marnie Baizley of Winnipeg 9-2, 7-9, 9-3, 5-9, 9-2 in a 90-minute marathon. Kelly Patrick of Edmonton, a finalist in singles play, lost the second match to world number-eight Thierry Lincou 9-4, 9-3, 9-3 while Doug Parent of Calgary won the closer 10-8, 9-3 over.

"We achieved our goal right across the board but you hate to lose the final," said Baizley, 25, ranked 37th in the world. "I knew my match was the key one but the longer it got the more tired I became. She just had a bit more in the tank at the end."

Canada advanced to the final defeating Hong Kong in the quarterfinal and Britain in the semifinal by 3-0 counts. Both those matches featured strong performances by Nicole Carroll of Pickering, Ont. Jonathan Dale of St. John's, Nfld., also played early in the tournament.
