CANADA GOES TO PAN AM SQUASH IN BRAZIL WITH A DEVELOPMENT TEAM

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil-December 3, 2000 --Ian Power of Toronto and Margo Green of Ottawa reached the semifinals in men's and women's play respectively Sunday at the Pan Am squash championships.

Power, the younger brother of world number-two Jonathon Power, defeated Olando Joranillo of Columbia 3-1 in a tough match. The Montreal-based Power now meets Rafael Alarcon, one of three Brazilians to reach the final four. Alarcon upset top -seed Jorge Guterrez of Mexico in his quarterfinal.

In women's play, Green, the tournament's top-seed, easily defeated Anna Bello of Brazil 9-5, 9-1, 9-2 to reach the final four. She'll now face veteran Karen Redfern of Brazil.

"I've been advantaged by the draw but I expect the matches will now be much tougher," said Green, based in Toronto. "I've played Redfern several times at tournaments so I know what to expect. She's a very good player."

Amanda Paton of Edmonton and Alana Miller of Winnipeg lost their matches and were eliminated.

The Canadians are the strongest squash nation in the Americas but have sent a developmental team to this tournament. The last time the Americas met was at the Pan Am Games in Winnipeg last year and the Canadians steamrolled to all four gold medals. Semifinals are Monday.
