August 11, 2000 copyright 2000 Squashtalk.com : STRONG CANADIAN TEAM OFF TO GOOD START AT WORLD UNIVERSITY SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS PILZEN, Czech Republic--Number-one seed Marnie Baizley of Winnipeg advanced to the quarterfinal in women's play Friday to highlight a strong start for Canada at the 21-country World University Squash Championships. Baizley, ranked third in Canada and 37th in the world, defeated Judith Varga of Hungary 3-0. She'll face Anita Muller of Switzerland on Saturday. Canada's other female entry Nicole Carroll of Pickering, Ont., won her first round match but was eliminated in the round of 16 by Laura Hamilton of Britain 3-0. In men's play, two Canadians advanced to the round of 16. Second-seed Kelly Patrick of Edmonton defeated Mark Brunner of Switzerland 3-0 and Doug Parent of Calgary eliminated Markus Knaepper of Germany 3-0. Parent faces Alexander Bell of France, seeded in the 5-8 bracket, on Saturday while Patrick, ranked third in Canada, faces Ben Rickaby of Britain. Jonathan Dale of Toronto was eliminated in the first round. Representing the USA, Harvard graduate Tim Wyant advanced against Stefan Oppolzer from Germany and Amherst graduate Dave McNeely advanced against Lukas Pitule from the Czech Republic.
