Hartford Golf Club Hosts Exciting Pro Event

by Ron Beck, Dec 2 2001 [Also Read: Leach upsets Martin by Rob Dinerman]

The Hartford Golf Club, in former times was one of the focal points of USA Squash. This dates back to the days when the legendary Eddie Ried was the resident pro and North American champion, and in 1950 won the North American Open on his home courts at the Golf Club.

The HGC still boasts a great geographic location - midway between New York, Boston and Canada and close by the college juggernaut at Trinity College.

So when the HGC reinstituted their Open Event this year they were able to attract an interesting and eclectic field featuring former World #2, Brett Martin, who is now living near Hartford, as well as Trinity and Harvard stars Karlen, Ferreira, Ragonste, Bhappu and Patterson, as well as regional PSA aspirants, who are hovering in the 100-200 ranking quartile.

The retired PSA star Brett Martin showed he still can muster flashes of offensive brilliance, in running through to the finals against a motivated, young and hungry crowd. Martin first ousted USA team-member and Harvard #1 Pete Karlen, then teaching pro Imran Khan, and next Canadian aspirant, Sean DeLierre, before Martin finally succombed in the five-game finals to Clive Leach after his five gamer against Delierre.

Also of interest, Harvard's Dylan Patterson upended Trinity's Bhappu in early season sparring before the two top Intercollegiate rivals. Both Harvard and Trinity will move to Trinity's home courts next weekend for the US Teams.
