Dublin, Dec 23 2001 The Czech Open provided the harbinger. In Prague last weekend, Derek Ryan fell in a huge upset to young Viktor Berg of Canada (ranked #75). This week it was Ireland's Liam Kenny who finally had his big day, upending perennial defending National Champion Derek Ryan. Ryan had encountered difficulty in last year's edition of this event, as he was pressed hard by Kenny in the finals, and SquashTalk sources in Dublin at that time predicted that it would only be a matter of time for Kenny to hoist the crown. That day was today. Today at the Irish Nationals Derek Ryan, world #35, lost his national crown to Liam Kenny, world # 55, 3/1 . Kenny won in a long dual 9/5 4/9 9/4 9/3 . Ryan was a carrying an injury from last week's action in Prague, but Kenny took full advantage of that weakness, and played attacking accurate squash. Kenny relentlessly cut the ball off early at every opportunity and kept Ryan under pressure throughout. It was well played and entertaining. In the women's draw Madeline Perry, a WISPA tour regular at present, beat Louise Finnegan 3/1. The first three games were hard fought and relatively even, but in the fourth Perry's superior fitness and experience shone through as she won it 9/0. Andre Maur returned home on a visit from the luxurious Concourse club in Atlanta to claim the men's over 35 division. The men's over 40's was won by Neil Stonewigg over Laurence Hastings 3/0. The women's over 35 was won by Ann Sheehan over Dolores Molloy in a close 5 games. The Irish juniors were well represented at the tournament with Dwayne Owens winning the Mens "B" division. There is a big junior tournament, the Irish Junior Open, Jan 11th at the Westwood club in Dublin with 155 entries 100 Irish and 55 overseas entries . |
