EDINBURGH (The Star): Eleven-year-old Low Wee Wern of Malaysia pulled off a major upset in the Scottish Junior Open squash championships, beating top seed Bephan Williams of Wales to win the girls’ Under-13 title here yesterday.

The unseeded Wee Wern defeated Williams 10-8, 9-7, 9-10, 9-1 in the final match, which lasted 40 minutes. In the semi-finals, the pint-sized Wee Wern, who won the Under-11 and Under-13 titles in the Australian Selection Series this year, came back from a set down to beat Emily Park of the United States 7-9, 9-7, 9-6, 9-1.

Malaysia were represented by 15 juniors in the four-day championships and Wee Wern was the only one to land a title. Coach Raymond Arnold said that Wee Wern’s efforts came as a pleasant surprise.

“She was making her debut in the Scottish Junior Open and we are very proud of her achievement. She was up against a much bigger Williams but she was not intimidated at all,” said Raymond.

“Although she was trailing in the first two sets, she still showed nerves of steel. She was down 7-8 in the first set and trailed 6-7 in the second. But on both occasions fought back to win. The third set was closely fought match and Wee Wern lost the crucial point when tied at 9-9. In the fourth set, she played a fast attacking game and Williams could not cope with it.” Raymond hoped that Penang’s Wee Wern would put up another good performance in the British Junior Open, which begins in Sheffield on Wednesday.

Unseeded June Tiong qualified for the girls’ Under-15 final and was beaten 9-2, 4-9, 6-9, 7-9 by Hong Kong’s Chan Ho Ling.
