Jonathon Power 2003 Campaign Curtailed Abruptly
Two steps forward one step back is a fitting analysis when describing Jonathon Power's 2003 squash campaign. Power's year started off with the Tournament of Champions in February where he made it to the final four. A sixth Canadian National crown and the coveted Super Series title followed in April/early May and both the bank account and confidence level were looking good.

A disappointing result followed at the PSA Masters. Egyptian Karim Darwish played the match of his career ousting Power 15-14 in the fifth game. It was then back to jolly old England in August as Peter Nicol and Co. brought on the Prince English Open. Power played well but John White played better. Power left the Crucible Theatre with second place winnings, probably just enough cash to cover the expenses.

As the leaves changed color signifying fall it was U.S. Open in Boston followed quickly by Detroit's Motor City Open. The results. A stray ball to the eye in Symphony Hall factored into a 5 game quarter-final loss to Thierry Lincou. However revenge came swiftly as Power took out Titi in the Detroit final much to the delight of those in attendance at the Birmingham Athletic club.

The pattern for the season so far? Good results in the smaller events and tough luck in the majors meaning Power's ranking went down to five.

The two Johns, Nimick and Beddington, salvaged the British Open albeit in scaled down form. This 16 man draw saw Power bow out in the semis to Peter Nicol in five games despite being up 2-0. Power described the match as
follows, "It was a nightmare, I thought it was all but over in the third game. In fact I thought it was all but over loads of times." The greatest
rivalry in squash was once again knotted 17-17.

November was very good to Power. Two events in Canada and two great results.

Runner-up at the Canadian Open to a red-hot Nicol and for the third time in four years the Canadian Classic title. Power's luck appeared to have changed for the better and with only a couple events remaining in the 2003 season he felt that "If I continue to play well and come away with some more wins I can say that it was a good year."

Five Screws Placed in Power's left hand (X-ray appears with permission of Jonathon Power)
Well as we all know, the "Disaster in Doha" saw Power's season end prematurely. A collision with Nick Matthew resulted in a broken hand.

Power's
manager Jason Matthison explains, "JP severely broke his left hand (not just his little finger) He had surgery at 8:00 AM the day following his match where it was determined he broke his metacarpal shaft. He has 5 screws placed in his hand and has been told that he cannot do physical activity for 6-8 weeks. He has withdrawn from the upcoming World Open and is extremely devastated to say the least."

xFor the second year in a row Power has been forced out of the World Open due to injury. Last year David Palmer(accidentally) nearly took his head off during their semi-final clash.

So to reflect on Power's 2003 season. It wasn't bad. Heck the majority of the players on the tour would consider those results outstanding. With two months off to recharge the body and get match hungry now staring Power in the face. 2004 will now be even more interesting.
